Long Casing - LCSG - Thread Plug and Ring Gages

To use Long Casing Gages, these steps are suggested:

  • Use a wire brush and a solvent to clean the threads of the casing and the coupling. Get rid of any dirt, rust, grease, or burrs that might affect the gauging accuracy.
  • Put a thin layer of thread compound or lubricant on the threads of the gage and the casing or the coupling. This will lower the friction and wear of the gage and the thread, and avoid galling or seizing.
  • Put the thread plug gage into the casing until it is hand-tight. Then, apply a little torque to the gage and turn it one full turn. If the gage goes in easily and does not bind, the thread is good. If the gage does not go in or binds, the thread is bad or out of tolerance.
  • Put the thread ring gage on the coupling until it is hand-tight. Then, apply a little torque to the gage and turn it one full turn. If the gage goes on easily and does not bind, the thread is good. If the gage does not go on or binds, the thread is bad or out of tolerance.
  • Take the gages off the casing and the coupling and clean them with a solvent. Wipe off any extra thread compound or lube.

Long casing, also known as LCSG, is a kind of pipe that lines the walls of a well that has been drilled. It has an 8 round thread with a coupling, which needs special thread plug and ring gages to check the thread quality and size.

These gages follow the API Spec 5B, which sets the standards for thread inspection and gauging for casings and tubings. The gages used for long casing are thread plug and ring gages.

The thread plug gage measures the internal thread of the casing. The thread ring gage measures the outside thread of the coupling. These gages vary in size, pitch, taper, and angle depending on the casing diameter.
